ALABAMA
STATE PERIMETER - 1,565 miles
- TERRAIN: Alabama is comprised of coastal plains at the Gulf of Mexico turning to hills and broken terrain in the north. Five major land areas make up the Alabama landscape with more than two thirds of the state covered by the East Gulf Coastal Plain.
- FUN FACTS: The first rocket to put humans on the moon was built at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. In 1836, Alabama became the first state to recognize Christmas as an official holiday.
- TIPS FOR COMPLETING THIS DISTANCE: 1565 miles sounds like a lot, but try going with a team! If you and 9 friends plan on 150 miles, you’ll all have this challenge complete within a month.
ICONIC ROUTE - SELMA TO MONTGOMERY MARCH - 54 miles
- SIGNFICANCE: March, 1965 – requiring a few attempts before succeeding, people marched 54 miles over 5 days from Selma, Alabama, to the state Capitol in Montgomery to demand an end to discrimination in voter registration.
- POINTS OF INTEREST: During an early attempt, on March 7, 1965 (“Bloody Sunday”) state and local lawmen met and attacked about 600 marchers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, with billy clubs and tear gas, driving them back to Selma. In response, Martin Luther King Jr lead another attempt with nearly 25,000 people accompaning. These events led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

ALASKA
STATE PERIMETER - 35,442 miles
- TERRAIN: Alaska is home to 3.5 million lakes, rugged mountain ranges, flat tundra landscapes, plus areas of marshland and wetland permafrost. Glaciers cover 16,000 square miles (41,000 sq km)!
- FUN FACTS: Of the 20 highest peaks in the United States, 17 are in Alaska.
- TIPS FOR COMPLETING THIS DISTANCE: The longest distance in our challenge (by about 6x) is only going to be achieved with a group. Gather the entire crew, and get moving! Consider activities that really rack up the miles – everybody bike, bike, bike!
ICONIC ROUTE - Bering Glacier - 118.06 miles
- SIGNFICANCE: The Bering Glacier is the largest and longest glacier in continental North America, with an area of approximately 5,175 km2, and a length of 190 km. Located in coastal south central Alaska, it is bounded in the north by the St. Elias Mountains and in the south by the Gulf of Alaska.
- POINTS OF INTEREST: Meltwater from the terminus of the glacier collects in Vitus Lake, which flows to the Gulf of Alaska via the Seal River.
- TIPS FOR COMPLETING THIS DISTANCE: This distance is great for moderate activity. Shoot for 10,000 steps per day and you’ll hit this goal within a month. Live in a cold climate? Mix up your routine and add snowshoeing or winter hiking!
ARIZONA
STATE PERIMETER - 1,420 miles
- TERRAIN: Arizona is a fairly mountainous and rugged state, and is home to the world’s largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest. Many mountain ranges exceed 9,000 feet (2,700 m) in elevation, and some can hold snow all summer.
- FUN FACTS: Arizona’s Sonoran Desert is the only place on earth where the iconic saguaro cactus grows. 6. Arizona has 35 state parks and natural areas preserving the state’s natural, cultural and recreational resources.

ICONIC ROUTE - El Camino Del Diablo / Devil's highway - 265 miles
- SIGNFICANCE: Dubbed “the curviest road in the United States”
- POINTS OF INTEREST: This road climbs from 3,500-foot elevation and climb to nearly 7,000 feet and has 400 switchbacks!
- TIPS FOR COMPLETING THIS DISTANCE: Run, walk, jog, bike, hike – solo or with friends, see if you can fit 400 switchbacks within 265 miles!
ARKANSAS
STATE PERIMETER - 1,163 miles
- TERRAIN: Arkansas can be split into two halves, the highlands in the northwest half and the lowlands of the southeastern half. The highlands include The Ozarks and the Ouachita Mountains. The southern lowlands include the Gulf Coastal Plain and the Arkansas Delta.

ICONIC ROUTE - Ozark Highland Trail - 218 miles
- SIGNFICANCE: The Ozark Highlands Trail roams through parts of seven counties in northwest Arkansas.
- POINTS OF INTEREST: It stretches from Lake Fort Smith State Park, across the Ozark National Forest, to the Buffalo National River.
- TIPS FOR COMPLETING THIS DISTANCE: This distance is great for combined activities. Want to complete within 1 month? Shoot for 50-60 miles per week.
California
STATE PERIMETER - 4,591
- TERRAIN: California is the third largest state in the USA and the geography is incredibly varied. Coastal cliffs to golden sand beaches. Mountain peaks to iconic lakes and river valleys. And sprawling desert to boot.
- FUN FACTS: You can travel between both the lowest and highest points in the continental U.S.—Death Valley and Mt. Whitney—in less than a day.

ICONIC ROUTE - Pacific Crest Trail (CA Portion) - 1691.7 miles
- SIGNFICANCE: Part of the Triple Crown of hiking – the infamous Pacific Crest Trail travels up the Pacific cast from the US Mexico border, to Canada
- POINTS OF INTEREST: The route passes through 25 national forests and 7 national parks. Its midpoint is near Chester, California (near Mt. Lassen), where the Sierra and Cascade mountain ranges meet.

COLORADO
STATE PERIMETER - 1,302 miles
- TERRAIN: From plains on the eastern slope, to dry, desert canyons on the west. The state is mostly known for it’s rugged Rocky Mountain peaks!
- FUN FACTS: While Colorado is technically not the most mountainous state (that title goes to West Virgina) it is home to 53+ mountain peaks exceeding 14,000 feet (known as “fourteeners” or “14ers” locally) — the most of any state.

ICONIC ROUTE - Colorado Trail - 485 miles
- SIGNFICANCE: This iconic trail passes through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Colorado Rockies. There have been additions to the total milage, but the original footpath trail is 485 miles.
- POINTS OF INTEREST: From high mountain lakes and towering peaks – the average elevation of the Trail is 10,300 feet.
- TIPS FOR COMPLETING THIS DISTANCE: Most hikers complete this trail in 4-6 weeks, logging roughly 13 miles per day. See if you can stay on track! We encourage a range of activities – run, walk, jog, bike, and hike!
ICONIC ROUTE - CLIMB 53 CO 14'ERS - 142.11 MILES
- SIGNFICANCE: Colorado is home to 50+ fourteeners (14’ers)
- POINTS OF INTEREST: Traverse this accumulated vertical elevation from sea level to the top of each peak
- TIPS FOR COMPLETING THIS DISTANCE: You got this! This distance is perfect for a modertately active run / walker. Be sure to mix in at least a few hills!
ICONIC ROUTE - Mile High City - 1 mile (5280 feet)
- SIGNFICANCE: The capital of Colorado (Denver) sits 1 mile (5280 feet) above sea level – Denver is known as the “Mile High City”
- POINTS OF INTEREST: At Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies MLB, the seats in the 20th row of the upper deck are purple, vs dark green like the rest of the stadium, marking exactly 1-mile high

CONNECTICUT
STATE PERIMETER - 828 miles
- TERRAIN: “Eastern Connecticut (central and north) is hilly, heavily forested, and crisscrossed by narrow river valleys. In the west, the Appalachian Mountains stretch north across the state on into western Massachusetts. The Berkshire (hills or mountains) and the narrow Taconic Mountain Range are the dominant landforms.”
- FUN FACTS: The first automobile law was passed by the state of CT in 1901 – setting a speed limit at 12 miles per hour.

ICONIC ROUTE - FARMINGTON CANAL HERITAGE TRAIL - 81.2 MILES
- SIGNFICANCE: Originally built in 1821, this purpose of this trail was to help faciliate trade. Within 12 years, a railbed was laid along the exact path.
- POINTS OF INTEREST: Resortation began in the 90’s – the trail now stretches from New Haven, CT to Northampton, MA with much of it paved trail for non-motorized recreation and commuting.
- TIPS FOR COMPLETING THIS DISTANCE: You go this! Great for mild to moderate activity. Aim for 20-ish miles per week and you can complete this distance within 1 month!
DELAWARE
STATE PERIMETER - 527 miles
- TERRAIN: “Most of Delaware’s land is very flat, averaging only 58 ft. above sea level. The only significant exceptions are the rolling hills of the Piedmont Plateau that cover the northern edges of the state; the state’s highest point is located there, rising to 447 ft.”
- FUN FACTS: Delaware is the 2nd smallest state in the US, 2nd only to Rhode Island
- TIPS FOR COMPLETING THIS DISTANCE: This a great distance for a moderately active run/ walk team of 5+. If all of you shoot for 10,000 steps a day – you’ll achieve this distance in about 1 month!
ICONIC ROUTE - MOUTH OF DELAWARE TO BRANDYWINE - 68 MILES
- SIGNFICANCE: Scenic stretch from Dover, Delaware to Brandywine Battlefield State Park, where in September 1777, the British Army defeated the American army and later took Philadelphia.
- POINTS OF INTEREST: Rolling hills and valleys, formal gardens, romance and history

FLORIDA
STATE PERIMETER - 8,896 miles
- TERRAIN: The Florida peninsula is a diverse collection of islands, marshes, springs, swamps and hundreds of small lakes, rivers and ponds.
- FUN FACTS: The swampy Everglades (averaging about 8 ft. above sea level) is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States.

ICONIC ROUTE - Florida Trail - 1,562 miles
- SIGNFICANCE: The Florida Trail is one of eleven National Scenic Trails in the United States.
- POINTS OF INTEREST: It runs from Big Cypress National Preserve to Fort Pickens at Gulf Islands National Seashore, Pensacola Beach.

ICONIC ROUTE - FLORIDA KEYS - 105 MILES
An iconic string of tropical islands from Key Largo all the way to Key West where you can find the southernmost point of the continental United States. Watch out for alligators along this two-lane highway and stop for a drink at the infamous Sloppy Joes Bar.
GEORGIA
STATE PERIMETER - 3,288 miles
- TERRAIN: There are six major geographical regions of Georgia – Appalachian Plateau region, the Ridge and Valley region, the Blue Ridge region, the Piedmont region, and the Coastal Plain region.

- SIGNFICANCE: Rock City is a popular tourist destination. Great views, magical rock formations, and seasonal events

HAWAII
STATE PERIMETER - 1,052 miles

- SIGNFICANCE: Originally a foot path known as the King’s Road, the original walkway was established in the 1400’s.
- POINTS OF INTEREST: “The route is the only thing connecting the small town of Hana to central Maui and because of this, Hana has been able to maintain its distinctly Hawaiian culture and charm. While this is a lovely end to the journey, it is all of the natural beauty you’ll witness along the way that makes this route so special.”

STATE PERIMETER - 1,608 miles
- TERRAIN: “Every corner of Idaho has impressive scenery somewhere on the horizon. This immensely rugged state sits astride the major physiographic regions of the Rocky Mountains, the Great Basin and the Columbia Plateau. Aside from picture-perfect vistas of snowcapped peaks and mountain lakes, the state has unusual landforms.”

STATE PERIMETER - 1,157 miles
- TERRAIN: “Bordered by the Mississippi River on the west and the Wabash and Ohio Rivers on the southeast and south, the landscape of Illinois can be grouped into three main regions; the Central Plains, the Shawnee Hills and the Gulf Coastal Plain.”

- SIGNFICANCE: This trail system extends from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi, then loops back along the Illinois River and the Hennepin Canal.

- SIGNFICANCE: The Magnificent Mile is Chicago’s premier commercial district. The vibrant, bustling area is home to upscale shops, luxe fashion outlets, cool restaurants and posh hotels.
- POINTS OF INTEREST: Landmarks include the historic Chicago Water Tower, the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower, the terracotta Wrigley Building skyscraper and the 100-story John Hancock Center, which has a rooftop observation deck with fine dining and panoramic city views.

INDIANA
STATE PERIMETER - 924 miles
- TERRAIN: Northern Indiana is quite flat, but southern Indiana is full of hills, canyons, and more textured terrain.
- FUN FACTS: The Indianapolis 500 Car Race is the biggest sporting event in the world.

- SIGNFICANCE: The Knobstone Trail is the longest hiking trail in Indiana.

iowa
STATE PERIMETER - 1,019 miles
- TERRAIN: Iowa is mostly rolling hills with stretches of flat plains
- FUN FACTS: Along with being one of the Top 20 states in public K–12 education, the state also has the best graduation rate at 91.3%

ICONIC ROUTE - loess hills national scenic byway - 200 miles
- SIGNFICANCE: The Loess Hills National Scenic Byway began in 1989 as a grassroots effort
- POINTS OF INTEREST: A “Loess Hill” is a hill made of loess – comprised almost entirely of windblown soils over thousands of years, that reaches at least 60ft in height. Although deposits of loess are found across the world, nowhere else but China are those deposits higher than they are in Iowa.

Kansas
STATE PERIMETER - 1,281 miles
- TERRAIN: Kansas’ western half is covered by the Great Plains, which rise in elevation as you continue west toward the Rocky Mountains. Near the Colorado border is Mount Sunflower, the state’s highest point.
- FUN FACTS: Smith County marks the center of the 48 contiguous United States.

ICONIC ROUTE - flint hills trail - 117 miles
- SIGNFICANCE: The Flint Hills Trail is the seventh-longest rail-trail in America, and the longest trail in Kansas. It follows the general route of the Santa Fe National Historic Trail and forms a component of the coast-to-coast American Discovery Trail.
- POINTS OF INTEREST: The Flint Hills represent one of the last remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystems in the world. It is home to abundant prairie plant and wildlife species, spectacular views, national historic sites, and a diverse set of recreational areas. The eastern portions of the route travels alongside the Marais Des Cygnes River, between rushing waters and towering bluffs, through rolling farmland and riparian woodlands.

Kentucky
STATE PERIMETER - 1,170 miles
- TERRAIN: Kentucky can be divided into five major physiographic regions: the Mississippi Embayment or Jackson Purchase in the west, the Mississippian Plateaus or Pennyrile, the Western Coal Field, the Bluegrass, and the Eastern Coal Field.
- FUN FACTS: Kentucky is known as the horse capital of the world – and the Kentucky Derby, first held in 1875 at Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, is the longest-running sports event in the United States.

- SIGNFICANCE: The Kentucky Derby is the longest-running sports event in the United States. Dubbed the “Run for the Roses,” and often referred to as the greatest two minutes in sports – thoroughbred horses race a distance of 1.25 miles

Louisiana
STATE PERIMETER - 1,486 miles
- TERRAIN: “Louisiana’s topography consists of relatively flat lowlands located on the coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River’s alluvial plain. The highest point in Louisiana is along its border with Arkansas but it still below 1,000 feet (305 m)”
- FUN FACTS: Louisiana is known for many festivals such as the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Bayou Country Superfest, Essence Music Festival, Festival International, Voodoo Experience and its most famous, Mardi Gras.

ICONIC ROUTE - Creole Nature Trail - 180 miles
- SIGNFICANCE: The route travels through thousands of acres of untouched wetlands, and three National Wildlife Refuges: Cameron Prairie, Sabine, and Lacassine, plus a bird sanctuary!
- TIPS FOR COMPLETING THIS DISTANCE: Go solo! You can acheive this distance in no time with regular run / walks of 5+ miles
ICONIC ROUTE - Bourbon Street - 2 miles
- SIGNFICANCE: A popular tourist attraction, Bourbon Street embodies the life of a party town.
- POINTS OF INTEREST: Bourbon Street runs 13 blocks through the heart of the French Quarter, from Canal Street to Esplanade Avenue
- TIPS FOR COMPLETING THIS DISTANCE: Collecting state magnets? This is an easy distance to knock out in 1 day! Did someone say “walktail”? We’re not advocating that you break any open container laws, but it sounds fitting to imagine yourself enjoying this 2 mile stretch with an adult bev in hand.
Maine
STATE PERIMETER - 4,248 miles
- TERRAIN: Maine is divided into three distinct areas; the Atlantic Ocean Coastal Lowlands, the Central Uplands, and mountain ranges of the Appalachian Mountains in the northwestern reaches of the state.
- FUN FACTS: 90% of the country’s lobster supply comes from Maine. It’s also the largest producer of blueberries!

ICONIC ROUTE - Carriage Roads of Acadia - 45 miles
- SIGNFICANCE: The Carriage Roads and stone bridges in Acadia National Park were financed and directed by philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, Jr., between 1913 and 1940, for hikers, bikers, horseback riders and carriages.
- POINTS OF INTEREST: The network includes 57 miles of woodland roads free of motor vehicles, of which 45 miles are within Acadia National Park . These allow seasonal cross-country skiing and limited snowmobiling. Twelve miles are on private land.

Maryland
STATE PERIMETER - 3957 miles
- TERRAIN: The landscape of eastern Maryland is dominated by the Chesapeake Bay and the low-lying Coastal Plain that surrounds it.
- FUN FACTS: Maryland has been called “America in Miniature” because so much is packed into its 10,460 square miles of land and water.

ICONIC ROUTE - National Road (MD portion) - 170 miles
- SIGNFICANCE: Construction for the nation’s first major highway began in Cumberland, Maryland in 1811 and headed west
- TIPS FOR COMPLETING THIS DISTANCE: This is a great distance for an active runner (5+ miles per day) Add in biking and hit your goal in no time!
Massachusetts
STATE PERIMETER - 880 miles

- SIGNFICANCE: The Long Trail runs the length of the state of Vermont. It is the oldest long-distance backpacking trail in the United States, (finished in 1930) and it later became the inspiration for the Appalachian Trail.

About Us
5K Fun Runs!Participants walk or run 3.1 miles, then drink beer! Everyone is invited to enjoy the day’s entertainment: live music, great food, giveaways and activities with partners and sponsors. Everyone receives a craft brew, and a collectors pint glass or seasonal swag item. 10% of our proceeds help support local nonprofit partners.
