THIS EPISODE

On the second episode of The LubDub, Dr. Robert Morse, Champion for the Heart to Start – Seaside group, stops by to offer some words about consistently putting in the work even when it’s hard. Dave Harkin, co-owner of Portland Running Company, shares great advice on proper footwear, recovery tools,  apparel, and more.

Enjoy!

Finding the Perfect Shoes

The number one question we get about running gear is, “what shoes should I buy?” I always give them the same answer. I say, “Buy the Nike Pegasus! It’s the best and only shoe!”

KIDDING!

There are so many different types of shoes and just as many types of feet. You need to find one that works for you. Dave shares his three ‘F’ model of shoe fitting.

First we look for the right FIT. Is the length, width, depth, toe box and overall shape of the shoe right for the persons foot? Second, how does it FEEL? Is it comfortable? Does your foot feel secure? Finally, does the shoe FUNCTION the way you intend to use it? From trail running to racing or an everyday trainer. Function also relates to how much support or other factors a shoe needs to provide. The key is getting all “F’s” working together.”

He also added a fourth F, and that is FUN! He stresses the most important part of this process is to enjoy being active.

“…fun, get some shoes on and get out there. Your shoes should not be the thing that you’re thinking about!”

After you get your shoes, Dave also suggests a few key pieces of gear you should purchase. High quality wicking socks, some sort of self massage devices, and a small water bottle you can carry with you on a run.

About Dr. Robert W. Morse, D.O., FACC

Each week, we are joined by a Providence Heart to Start Champion. These are people committed to the program and helping to inspire and motivate by being a resource to particpants on this journey.

According to his bio:

Dr. Robert Morse believes that a physician should be not only a provider of care, but also a teacher. “Your cardiovascular health is a collaborative effort,” he says. “I’ve found that an educated patient will generally do better.” In his practice, Dr. Morse emphasizes preventive care. “Prevention is the best treatment,” he says. He gives all of his patients as much time as needed at each appointment to ensure they get the quality of care they deserve.

Dr. Morse, a runner himself, has been practicing medicine on the Oregon Coast for the past ten years, and this is his second year with the Heart to Start program. He LOVES being outside in the beautiful Oregon coastal forests.

He left us with this great quote, to remind us of the importance of putting in the hard work on a daily basis.

“…The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong. Nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned, but time and chance happen to them all.”

About Dave Harkin

Dave has a wonderful energy, charisma, and positivity about him that really draws you in. I ALWAYS enjoy talking with him and can’t thank he and his wife Paula for the may ways they’ve helped us over the past five years with the Brewery Running Series.

Dave has been a runner since he was 11 years old. He ran in college at the University of Oregon, where he graduated and went on to have a short career as a teacher. He kept trying to get hired at a running store but failed. Mistakenly, he thought they would be impressed by how fast he was but later realized that the skills he learned as a teacher would be his greatest asset in life.

Fast forward to the year 2000/2001 he and wife Paula, took over Portland Running Company (PRC) and the rest is history. Dave and the team at PRC love helping motivated runners, regardless of skill, to achieve their goals.

About Providence Heart to Start

We’re excited to be partnering with our friends from the Providence Heart to Start program to offer you a FREE 12-week running/walking training program! Rather than focusing on pace or ability, Heart to Start encourages taking several small steps (i.e. weekly training) and working toward a remarkable finish (i.e. goal event) where we celebrate each other as a community.

LEARN MORE!

Unlike our previous monthly challenges, this challenge starts Monday, November 16, and ends on Friday, February 5. Set a challenging 12-week mileage goal and work really hard to reach it by the end!

About Portland Running Co.

When you visit Portland Running Company for new shoes, expect a small workout. We don’t mind if you do it in a business suit but you may be more comfortable in workout clothes. We do a field gait evaluation. The technique draws from foot mechanical analysis, and it also connects the dots from your toes, to your ankles, to your knees, to your hips, and so on.

All are Welcome!

We don’t care if you’re a runner, walker, or something else. We just care that you’re active! While most of our participants are running, MANY are walking, pushing strollers, or finding other ways to participate.
