Today on the podcast, we chat with Jeff Parrish from Portland Cider Co. During a recent Happy Hour as part of our PNW October Challenge, Jeff was a guest as we prepared for our 5K at Portland Cider on October 17.

In this conversation, we learn about how Portland Cider Co. has been holding up during the pandemic, and some of their COVID pivots. We spend the bulk of the time chatting about the PDX Community Cider – “made with donated backyard apple & other fruits from people in the Portland Metro area.”10% for the sale of this cider goes back to Hunger-Free Oregon. Listen now!

About the Community Cider

Portland Cider Company is coordinating the 5th annual Community Cider, made with donated backyard apple & other fruits from people in the Portland Metro area. We once again call upon the Portland community for backyard apples, pears, plums, berries and more to hand-press into a community cider to support a local charity. All backyard fruits & berries are encouraged.
We’re collecting bushels of unwanted fruit July 13 thru September 30, with drop-off at our Clackamas Pub + Cidery.

In 2020, Portland Cider is excited to announce the PDX Community Cider will be available in cans for the first time! Released in 6-pack 12oz cans and single 19.2oz cans in late September, and found at retailers throughout Oregon & SW Washington through the Fall, 10% of the cider’s profits will be donated to Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon.

By putting our PDX Community Cider in a package for the first time, we expect to raise even more money for our charity partner in 2020! We raised $11,500 in 2019, more than 2X the amount raised in 2018. The more apples and fruits donated, the more cider we can make to raise money!

All money donated will benefit Hunger-Free Schools, a segment of Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon which works to ensure students of all ages and levels have enough to eat. Hunger Free Oregon is an organization committed to actively working to end hunger by connecting people to food and nutrition programs, raising awareness about hunger, and advocating for systemic changes.
10% of PDX Community Cider sales will be donated to Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon

This full-scale community effort is about bringing people together to create craft cider, using the fruits from our own backyards here in the Portland Metro area, while reducing waste with this unique Apple Recycling program & giving back to a local non-profit. Bringing together cider, community, sustainability, tradition and charity in Portland Cider Company’s Community Cider annual release.

We invite you to recycle your unwanted apples, pears and other backyard fruit – not throw them away! Bring it to us if it’s of edible quality in exchange for Portland Cider trade.

About Portland Cider Co.

Portland Cider Company makes the best cider in the Pacific Northwest – It’s in our roots! Our values stem from our traditional English beginnings. Somerset is a historic cider-making region in the UK, and they’ve been perfecting the cider-making process for more than a thousand years. We bring that old-world approach to our current home – the epicenter of craft cider. Pair traditional cider production methods with a little Portland personality and culture, and you’ve got the Portland Cider Company.

All are Welcome!

We don’t care if you’re a runner, walker, or something else. We just care that you’re active! Nearly 20% of our participants at Ordnance chose to walk this one, and we love it!
