Welcome to another installment of the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast; Inspiring Oregonians to Be Active, Have Fun, and Give Back. We host family-friendly, 5K fun runs that start and end at some of Oregon’s best breweries. If you’re looking for an un-timed 5K in Portland or around the state, click the link below and join us!
Today on the podcast, Drew, Michelle, and Nathan are talking about our favorite music to run to. We talk about how we pick music, when and why we do and do not run with music, and some of our favorite songs.
We’re by no means experts on this, and have very different philosophyies and ideas about how and when to run with music and what kind. Drew asks some thoughtful questions that, at least for me, helped me realize why I do run with music (when I do).
Listen now then add your own music selections in the comments below.
Cheers!
My Personal Philosophy on Running with Music
When I began running longer distances after college, I did so, in part, because of the Nike+ iShuffle thing. Remember that? It was this pod that connected to your shoe and kept track of your run with your iShuffle. I ALWAYS ran with music, and even had some inspirational coaches who would occasionally give feedback. At the time I couldn’t ever imagine running without music.
But I eventually started running more and more with people, and, well, it’s rude to be listening to music while you’re trying to have a conversation.
Over the years I’ve listened to countless books on tape, podcast, and endless pump up jams to power me through my runs. These days, I listen to The Daily most morning as I’m kind of addicted to their take on the state of our world. Even so, my preference is to go out completely disconnected.
No music. No podcasts. Nothing.
For me, it’s some of the only time I have to think. To completely let my mind wander and be unfocused. It’s beautiful and I cherish it.
Even still, there’s no denying when that perfect song comes on at just the right time during a run, and all of the sudden you start running faster and faster until you realize you’re going way faster than you should be. That’s also beautiful, and I guess what I’m really saying is that music, spoken word, or nothing, can ALL help you get in those miles and more importantly, KEEP going!
All are Welcome!
We don’t care if you’re a runner, walker, or something else. We just care that you’re active! While most of our participants are running, MANY are walking, pushing strollers, or finding other ways to participate.
