June 6, 2020 was supposed to our 5K fun run at Public Coast Brewing in Cannon Beach, OR. This quaint little coastal community is not only a very popular tourist destination but home to a couple of great local breweries.
Public Coast is one of them.
As one of the only true public coastlines in America, the Oregon coast is free and open to everyone, all 363 miles of it. Public Coast Brewing honors that same welcoming spirit by making craft beer that’s both delicious and approachable.
June 6 was also going to be Public Coasts’ 4th birthday celebration. In 2019, we helped them celebrate turning 3 years young with a nearly sold-out event, cupcakes, live music, and fantastic beer and food.
Since we couldn’t be there in person this year (due to, you know, the pandemic), we invited owner Ryan Snyder to our virtual Zoom happy hour. He was joined by his head brewer, Will Leroux, and assistant, Ben Christianson. Along with their families, they were celebrating at the brewery that day with a big cake.
Today on the podcast, you’ll get to hear our conversation. We asked Ryan what it’s like brewing beer during this pandemic; how they’re surviving as a business; how the Cannon Beach Community is doing; and a few ways we can continue to support them.

HOW IT STARTED

So how did a kid who grew up in Palm Desert, with an obsession with an obscure British soccer team that’s matched only by his love of the Portland Timbers, come to open a brewery in Cannon Beach?
Twenty-some years ago, Ryan Snyder was living in Las Vegas running taps in the back bar of Holy Cow Brewery for entrepreneur and Vegas legend Tom Wisner. The aroma of hops, the bright tanks and the buzz of a brewery in action left an indelible mark and he decided that one day he’d open a brewery.
Fast forward past meeting the “Girl from Cannon Beach,” joining the Martin family business, a restaurant gig, a bartending gig, a wedding, some kids, two hotels (The coastal luxe Stephanie Inn and the more family-oriented Surfsand Resort) and finally purchasing Clark’s Restaurant which as Ryan looked around, he thought “hmm… this will be the perfect spot for a brewery someday.” He honed his skills in hospitality and waited until the time was right.
Cannon Beach is a fabulous place to spend the day, long weekend, or just a few hours. No matter how long you’re there, make sure to stop at Public Coast Brewing while you’re in town!
