Welcome to another installment of the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast; Inspiring Oregonians to Be Active, Have Fun, and Give Back. We host family-friendly, 5K fun runs that start and end at some of Oregon’s best breweries.
On this episode of the podcast, Drew and I talk about our May running challenge.
We get it. Times are challenging. Staying at home for another month can lead us to be less active, isolated, and maybe having way less fun than we’d like.
We want to help you change that!
Join us for the MAY Oregon Virtual Distance Challenge, May 1 – 31, 2020. We’ll help push you to be active all month, connect with other great beer runners, and have a little (virtual) fun along the way. A portion of proceeds will go directly to the #EmergeStronger Community Challenge, part of the Oregon Food Bank.
In April, we had 150 participants who ran 7,000+ miles (to date) and raised over $700 for the Oregon Community Foundations: COVID-19 Relief Fund.
This month, in May, we’re going to ask that you commit to a specific number of miles you want to run or walk, then work your tail off to hit that number! Set a realistic goal, but push yourself #justalittlemore than you think you can do.
While we might not be able to come together in person at this time, nothing can stop us from BEING ACTIVE, HAVING FUN, and GIVING BACK!
HOW IT WORKS:
- Register for this event on Eventbrite
During registration you will set your intention with a monthly mileage goal. - Join our club on Strava* (it’s Free) to verify your miles
- Win great prizes!
Once you have registered, we’ll send you a more detailed email with instructions for participation.
At the end of May, we will look at your totals and send out prizes within two weeks!
BONUS:
Every Saturday in May, we will host a virtual Happy Hour at noon via Zoom. Join us for a laid back time of connecting with each other, hearing from some special guests, great raffle prizes, and sharing fun quaRUNtine stories!
Tag us in a post-challenge run/walk picture, and use the hashtags #orvirtualchallenge, #justalittlemore, and #orbrs2020. This will enter you into our weekly virtual Happy Hour raffle where you can win even more great prizes!
Be sure to enjoy your post run/walk cool downs with a tasty Oregon craft beer!
*Don’t use Strava yet? No problem! Strava integrates with MANY popular run/walk tracking apps. By using Strava as the hub, it helps us seamlessly track everything while puts all of us in one place for the social distancing/sharing aspect of this challenge.
THE PRIZES:
- 25% of goal: Wooden Coaster
- 50% of goal: Socks
- 100% of goal: Free run entry or t-shirt!
- 120%+: Beer Delivery from participating breweries!
* Swag and Merch items will be mailed within a few weeks of you hitting your mileage levels.

How Do you Set a Running Goal?
The best way to set goals is to make sure they are SMART. It’s a simple, common acronym that goes like this (I’ll use running references, but they work for other stuff too);
Specific
Your goals should state exactly what you want to do, with as much detail as possible. My goals for May is to run 100 miles. That’s pretty specific. For extra credit, you could even set some secondary goals in terms of average pace, etc.
Measurable
Your goals need a way you can quantify (numerically or descriptively) completion. Something that will tell you exactly when you’ve achieved it. Like most things in running, we meassure everything, so this is pretty easy to meassure. Did you hit your number of miles or not?
Attainable
This is where things get a little trickier. Can you actually, physicaly reach your goal? You want this to be both a challenge, but also something you can do with a bunch of hard work. This pairs nicely with the next one…
Realistic
Goals should stretch you, but also be connected to past performance. If you want to run 100 miles in a month, and you think you could attain that number, given your current life circumstances, is that realistic? For me, 100 miles is going to be tough, but if I focus, doable.
125 miles in a month is attainable for me (I’ve done it MANY times before), but not realistic given the current time restrictions in my life.
Time Bound
Every goal you set should have a date and time attached. You need to know the target you’re trying to hit. Easy!
If you’d like help thinking into your goals like I did with Drew in this episode, PLEASE reach out. I’d LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to help you think into this.
All are Welcome!
We don’t care if you’re a runner, walker, or something else. We just care that you’re active! We often have 10 – 15 participants who walk our events!
