Today on the show we’re replaying a pub chat we did at the Run Pub in Northwest Portland on February 19th. We talked with five of the fastest women in Portland featuring Olympic marathon trials, qualifiers, Carrie Dimoff, Jeannette Faber, Fiona Fallon, Susie Rivard, and Jessie Vickers.

These women are among the 500 or so fastest Americans who’ve run a 2:45 (or faster) marathon or 1:13 (or faster) for the half marathon. This has landed them a spot in the Olympic Marathon Trials being held Saturday, February 29th in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Run Pub is hosting a viewing party so if you’re not already planning to attend our 5K fun run event at Vagabond Brewing in SE Portland, definitely go check that one out. The results of this race, whatever they may be, determine who gets to run in the 2020 Tokyo games.

What we talked about

This conversation today is pretty wide-ranging. We talk about:

  • how these women got into racing
  • tech details about shoe selection, fueling, and favorite workouts
  • the mental side of things
  • how they stay motivated
  • how they approach the process of such a big race
  • balancing life and training
  • and MORE!

And here are some of the questions the audience submitted:

  1. What’s your spirit animal/alter ego?
  2. Is it true three of you went to the same small school in Michigan?
  3. (to Carrie) What was it like racing in the humidity of Doha at midnight?
  4. What’s your longest run/favorite workout?
  5. How do you balance desire to run fast/get a certain time with your love for the sport?
  6. How do you deal with lingering injuries?

As you’ll hear, none of these women are professional runners, meaning they all have day jobs and some have families. Yet they all find time to run like 70+ miles a week while doing everything else required of them in life.

These five women also have a wide range of experience when it comes to the marathon distance. Jeanette has over 20 marathons under her belt, and this will be Jessie’s second.

Dave Harkin, co-owner of Portland running company is the host and moderator. He’s the voice you’ll hear at the very beginning of the episode, and the random voice chiming in occasionally asking some follow up questions, well, that’s me. I was working the soundboard and laptop since we were also broadcasting this on Facebook Live. You can watch it on PRC’s YouTube Page here.

I really had a blast recording this and listening to this and it was motivating and inspiring, and even though I’m not going to go train for a marathon anytime soon, it was just fun to hear what it’s like for these women to do this at such a high level. We hope it will motivate and encourage YOUR running or other active endeavors, even if you’re not currently training for a marathon or trying to make an Olympic team enjoy.

We also hope this will become a semi-regular thing at the Run Pub where we chat with interesting people in a live format. Please leave us a comment and let us know if this is something you’d be interested in hearing more of.

About The Run Pub

When you visit Portland Running Company for new shoes, expect a small workout. We don’t mind if you do it in a business suit but you may be more comfortable in workout clothes. We do a field gait evaluation. The technique draws from foot mechanical analysis, and it also connects the dots from your toes, to your ankles, to your knees, to your hips, and so on.

All are Welcome!

We don’t care if you’re a runner, walker, or something else. We just care that you’re active! We often have 10 – 15 participants who walk our events!
