Today on the podcast we’re chatting with Rik Hall, co-founder, co-owner and occasional brewer at Baerlic Brewing in SE Portland. Rik and I sat down this summer in the Baerlic Taproom to talk about what Baerlic has been up to since I last chatted with Rik, along with plugging our run at the Baerlic Barley Pod in NE Portland on November 9.

Rik was one of our first guests on the podcast in 2017. During that chat, we talked about the opening of the Barley Pod, along with some of the backstory and histroy of how the brewery came to be. Baerlic just celebrated turning five years old, which is a tremendous accomplishment.

Today on the podcast, Rik gives us an update about how Baerlic is doing now that they are no longer the new kids on the block. He shares a bit about their philosophy and approach to brewing beer and building community. We discuss events they host along with causes they care about.

We also talk a lot about the how they are trying hard to retain their DIY/Punk Rock ethos amidst their various awards and accolades as of late. I ask him if the following statement is still relevant to them today.

Our point of view comes from a belief that we are all in this together and that our actions shape our world – by being honest, we are approachable; by being consistent, we are trusted; by being considerate, we can sleep at night; and by choosing to keep it simple, we are able to do this really well.

In short, yes, it is!

Rik is a genuine person who seems to care not only about their beer but about the people who work for Baerlic. Fitting into their culture while allowing space for individuality seems extremely important to them.

About Baerlic

Translating to ‘of barley’ in old english, bærlic reiterates the fundamental idea that all things, no matter how complex or involved, can always be traced backward to a single, simple core or point of view.
