Welcome to another installment of the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast; Inspiring Oregonians to Get Active, Have Fun, and Give Back. We host family-friendly, 5K fun runs that start and end at some of Oregon’s best breweries.
Today on the podcast we’re talking with the founder of Yoga and Beer, Mikki Trowbridge. Yoga and Beer provide all levels yoga classes in breweries, kind of like what we do with running! Yoga for me is one of those things I’ve only done a handful of times in my life, and every time I do it, I wonder why I don’t do it more often. It’s relaxing, it can be a challenging workout, and something that has a way of slowing us down, and centering us to what’s most important.
In my conversation with Mikki, we’re going to cover a lot of stuff. We’ll talk about what you can expect from a Yoga and Beer class, and how you can have that experience with us before our run at Migration Brewing on July 21. We’ll also talk about the benefits of Yoga for the mind and body. In addition to Yoga and Beer, Mikki manages the yoga program for the Oregon State Hospital, which is the psychiatric hospital. So, part of our conversation centers around how Yoga is used in fun social settings, as therapy, and everything in between.
There’s a promo code I’ll share later if you’d like to join us for Yoga and Beer at Migration on July 21. So keep listening!
“Yoga is a good opportunity to reconnect. …truly when you get down to the essence of yoga and the history of yoga it’s really just that connection. And so it doesn’t have to be on a mat. It doesn’t have to be in yoga pants it doesn’t have to be in a brewery or in a studio it doesn’t to be in poses that you can practice reconnecting and being mindful running drinking beer walking down the street doing anything”
About Mikki and Yoga + Beer
Mikki was pretty reluctant to start Yoga. She was a weightlifter and competitive swimmer, but had to give that up for a time when a huge blood clot was discovered in her arm. Her doctor suggested yoga and after Mikki completed that first class, couldn’t get enough! Mikki went through teacher training to better understand Yoga, and then found herself getting job offers. She had no intention of quitting her “real” job as the manager of a non-profit, but eventually did.
This is (sort of) where we Yoga and Beer (the business) comes in. As part of Mikki’s non-profit work, she managed a beer festival in Salem. She and her husband were visiting the Rogue hop farm one day, he told had a the “crazy” idea that she should do a yoga and beer class. She blew it off since Yogi’s aren’t supposed to drink, but eventually decided to give it a shot. Rogue agreed and their first yoga and beer class was scheduled for August of 2013. Sadly, Mikki’s father passed away a month or two before that first class, and understandably, promotion for the event went on the backburner. It must have been fate because 100 people showed up to that event and Yoga and Beer was born!
Today (July of 2018), they have about 30 classes a month with 13 instructors. If you live anywhere between Corvalis and Vancouver, Washington, you should be able to find a Yoga and Beer class. Check out their website for more information.
“…a well-balanced yoga class is going to work on. I mean we tend to think a bit of stretching but it’s actually that perfect balance between strength and stability. So by yoga it’s so hard for a lot of people that don’t do things like yoga or Palladio right is because it activates not your superficial level of muscles like your sixpack muscle or your biceps right. The muscles that are responsible for movement and that may make you look sexy to be going to get those activates and targets your deeper stability level.”
