Today on the podcast, my guest is D.J. Moxley, the brewmaster and one of the owners at Grixsen Brewing. Grixsen Brewing is located at 10th and Division in Southeast Portland, and we’ll be running there on July 28, 2018.

In this episode, DJ and I chat about his journey to becoming a brewer shortly after high school. We talk about how he turned his hobby into a thriving business. We’ll unpack the three words he uses to describe Grixsen (humble, respectful, celebratory), and discuss what makes them unique in their approach to creating great beer. He also tells me a few ways Grixsen likes to give back to the community.

Listen to the WHOLE episode because I share two promo codes somewhere in the middle for discounts to the Grixsen run. Listen now!

About DJ and Grixsen Brewing

According to their website, a “Grixsen” is defined as,

someone who believes in always giving an honest effort, to following the righteous path and to celebrate the uniqueness in everyone.

The name “Grixsen” is a mash-up of the last names of the three founders: Kurt Grimmond, DJ MoXley, Scott Petersen. DJ, which is short for Dennis Junior, (his dad’s name is also Dennis), started brewing when he was just 19 years old. One summer when he was home on vacation from college, he and some friends bought their first kit. He said he has always been fascinated with the role beer, breweries, and the whole industry has played in American history.

Shortly after he started brewing, he won a homebrew competition but wasn’t old enough to pick up the award (he entered under his dad’s name). His junior year of college, he met his future business partner, Scott Petersen, who encouraged him to give this “brewing thing” a legitimate shot.

DJ and his partners looked for a brewery location for a VERY long time. The building they ended up in is at the end of brewers row in SE Portland. They signed a 10-year lease in 2015 and finally opened in April of 2016. They did nearly all of the renovations themselves.

In July of 2018, they expect to see their latest renovation project completed. It’s a pretty big expansion project that includes a full restaurant featuring fresh, organic, original pub food, more taps, patio seating, and two garage doors that open right onto southeast Division street. It’s going to be a huge deal for them!
