Wednesday, June 7, is Global Running Day; a day to gather with the entire running community and publicly declare our love for running (and beer, but that’s not officially part of it). One of the great things about running is that everyone runs for their own reasons. Be that to push themselves physically or mentally, to achieve a big audacious goal, or simply to be active with friends. Elites and newbies often carry the same goals, just with different finishing times in mind.

Global Running Day is an extension of this idea, and brings the whole world together to celebrate the wonderful activity we call running!

Here are some suggestions for how to celebrate the high running holiday:

What is Global Running Day?

Global Running Day is the one day of the year when already passionate running advocates further declare their love of running. Last year it grew from National Running Day into Global Running Day to be more inclusive of the worldwide love for our sport. Every first Wednesday of June (this year, June 7, 2017), Planet Earth will celebrate all runners alike.

With so many different partners across the world, Global Running Day has turned into a global movement. Part of their goal is to get 1 million kids active and running on the day. In an interview in Women’s Running, Michael Capiraso, president, and CEO of New York Road Runners (and one of the holiday organizers) said,

…the Million Kid Run is a thrilling initiative that will see a million kids worldwide experience the joys of running that will hopefully inspire them to run for life.

So far in 2017, there are already 165 countries participating in Global Running Day, representing over 715,000 people and counting!

How to Participate

Participation is easy— just pledge to take part in any running activity on June 7, 2017. “It can be a solo lap around the block, a long run with friends, or even a game of tag with your kids. The key is to share your passion for the sport and inspire others to get moving.”

Since running is often more fun with others, we’ve listed a few ways you can celebrate with others – either locally here in Portland, or with us wherever you are in a virtual format!
