There are no shortage of 5K runs in Portland. A quick glance at any race calendar reveals 50+ of them in the metro area in July and August alone! Summer is a great time to race a 5K (or walk/jog is that’s more your speed), and because we don’t have another run until late July, we thought we would share a few other running options with you.
Below are five other 5K runs in Portland to help you get your running fix until our next brewery run on July 22. This list contains a few 5k’s I’ve done, as well as suggestions from running pals. Some of these are timed, some are untimed, some have a variety of race distance options, and all are sure to delight.
Happy running!
Independence Day 5K/10K, July 4
This race is part of the Portland Running Company Grand Prix Series. This 5K and 10K race is timed, and the course runs along the Willamette River, starting and ending at Champoeg State Park. All participants receive a Rogue beer and burger after the run. Register here and join the fun on our nations birthday!
Portland Parks 5K Fun Run Series, May – October
Every month from May until October, the Portland Parks & Recreation Department hosts family-friendly 5K races in parks all over Portland. I am registered for the Laurelhurst Park run on August 16. All events offer a casual or competitive race for you to pick from. When you’re finished, enjoy music, face painting, a raffle and more. They can be hard to get into, so register today if you want to run in the park near your house.
The Oregon Trail® Game 5k and 8k – August 6
I was and still am a massive fan of this classic 80’s game. I was immediately drawn to the premise of an Oregon Trail race! According the race website, this race takes:
…runners on a cross-country adventure from Missouri to Oregon, over mountains and across rivers, and to their final destination – Oregon City! Runners will have to make decisions along the course such as whether to ford a river, go hunting, and more! Can you make it to Oregon or will you die of dysentery?
It looks like runners will get a “timed score” as well as a “game score” based on the various challenges. Register here to join the fun!
Twilight Half Marathon, 5K and 10K – July 8
Technically this is in Vancouver, but it’s still a great event. Although I have not run this race myself, many people recommended it. Unlike traditional morning races, this is an evening run. The 5K begins at 6:30 pm, when, ideally, it’s a bit cooler.
According to race organizers, the course is totally flat, which is ideal for newer runners, or anybody who wants to set a PR! The scenery is fantastic, as are the souvenirs: a huge, glittery owl medal, one of 3 different tech shirts (you choose), a tamale dinner, and two craft beers or wine!
Register for this unique event that benefits the Children’s Cancer Association.
The Ladybug Run 5K and 10K – July 29
Maybe we shouldn’t list a race that directly conflicts with one of ours, but the Ladybug Run in Tigard along the Tualatin River, one has a great cause worth supporting.
According to race organizers, they hope to raise awareness for Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), a severe birth defect that occurs in one out of approximately 2,500 births and has a fatality rate of nearly 50%. All race entry fees and product sales for the event help children and families whose lives are impacted by this birth defect.
