One of the things I love about our 5K fun runs is that they attract all sorts of runners: New, old, casual and hardcore. Lately, I’ve had a few conversations with some of our regulars about what it might take to become a “real runner.” To be clear, we believe that if you have a body and can move it, then you are a real runner.
But I get their question.
Essentially, they want to know what it would take to make a 5K fun run feel easier. Or maybe, run it faster than last time, or possibly even try a longer distance.
If you would like to get more serious about your running, here are six things you can do to ramp it up. Even if you only decide to do one of them, it will help you get active and ideally, feel more fit while having tons of fun!
1. Set a Goal
Without a clear why, you’re more likely to get bored and quit. Dropping a few pounds or staying in shape aren’t specific reasons enough. Goals should be Specific, Measurable, Realistic, and Time-bound (SMART). I’m not suggesting you need a goal setting workshop for a fun run, but if you want to make running part of your active lifestyle, set some goals.
It could be as simple as run three times this week or finish the Stickmen Brewing 5K Fun Run on November 11 in 35 minutes or less. Those are SMART goals!
2. Buy Good Running Shoes
While you don’t need fancy running shoes, you may find it more enjoyable to run in shoes that are comfortable and meant for running. You shouldn’t run in the same shoes you’ve been using to mow the lawn. Running in the wrong type of shoes invites injury. We’ve written about this before, but start by asking a specialist at Portland Running Company or another local running shop to find the right shoe for you.
3. Start Slowly
After attending one of our 5K fun runs, you may be excited to make running a regular part of your active lifestyle. That’s fantastic, but take it slow. Doing too much too soon is a great way to get injured, or burn out. A basic beginner plan (like the one we have here) will gradually add miles and help you improve slowly, so you aren’t forced to stop due to an overuse injury.
4. Don’t Quit Too Early
Anything worth doing well takes time. Many new runners hope to see results quickly. Before you stop, give it 8-12 weeks before expecting results. Look at it as a long-term investment into your future. Knowing that time frame will help prepare you for the journey ahead. Remember, this is a lifestyle choice; hang in there!
5. Make Time to Run
What gets scheduled gets done. We all live hectic lives; work, family, and school demand our attention. If we don’t make time for physical activity, inevitably, health problems will catch up with us. Try running in the morning, over lunch, or right after work. You might even try running to work to save time.
6. Run with Friends
Our events are fun because you get to run with friends (or people about to become your friends)! Find a friend and go for a run. Misery (or in this case euphoria), loves company. Research has shown that sharing your goals with friends can help you to be more accountable and stick with it.
These tips aren’t just for newer runners; seasoned runners may benefit from some of these reminders as well. If you don’t have a running partner, email us! We’d love to help you get connected to other runners.
